When I think about Astypalea, Greece, the things that spring to my mind are:
The picturesque and most gorgeous Old Town in the whole of Greece, with lined windmills, whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches and a hilltop castle.
Miles of unspoiled crystal-clear turquoise water beaches that are perfect for a refreshing dip, unwind and forget the vicissitudes of life.
Scenic roads dotted with high rocks and rolling hills that are a feast for the eyes. The mouth-watering cuisine, the welcoming people and how relaxed I felt when I left the island.
I left Astypalea, but Astypalaia hasn’t left me…

Astypalea Travel Guide
Where’s Astypalea?
Astypalea is the fourth largest and westernmost island of the Dodecanese and it’s located 43 km from Kos, 178 km from Rhodes and 215 km from Piraeus (Athen’s most popular port).
How to get to Astypalea?
You can get to Astypalea by ferry or plane.
- By plane
There’s a small airport on the island located in the village of Maltezana, 9 km from the capital Chora.
There are direct flights with Sky Express departing from Athens. They cost an average of €100, one way, and last approximately 50min, but they don’t run regularly.
You can book your flights with Skyscanner, the website I use and trust.
- By ferry
Astypalaia has two ports, the old port at Pera Gialos in Chora, and the port of Ag. Andrea, which is about 6 km from the capital.
A ferry from Athens takes approximately 10 hours. There are also ferries from other Dodecanese islands, like Rhodes and Kos, or Cycladic islands, such as Naxos and Amorgos.
If you’re in Europe, I recommend booking a flight to Kos and taking the 2h ferry to Astypalaia, in case you are not, the cheapest way is flying to Athens, followed by a ferry to Astypalea.

How to get around?
You can get around using public transport – there are electric minivans, AstyBus, that work on demand using a mobile app and the car/scooter/bike sharing system.
You can also hire a car, which is easier and more convenient. I hired mine with Kyrannos Rent a Car and I was very satisfied with their service.

What’s the best time to visit Astypalaia?
Astypalaia has a Mediterranean climate with warm sunny summers and mild winters.
You can visit the island from May to October and expect comfortable weather, with average temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C.
The best time to visit Astypalea is at the end of May/beginning of June or September. At these times, the island will have fewer tourists and you can get better prices on accommodations. Some beach restaurants might be closed though.
Where to stay?
I suggest spending at least three full days on the island and staying in Chora, which is centrally located. Alternatively, you can find good deals on accommodation in Maltezana and Livadi.
I stayed four nights at the beautiful Anatoli Luxury Studios and Suites and I loved it. It has an excellent location, in the heart of Chora, and provides a striking view of the castle. My spacious studio was beautifully decorated, and the bed was very comfortable.

The restaurants that I recommend are: Ageri and Agoni Grammi, in front of the windmills; Aiolos Pizza, at the port; and Astropelos, on Livadi Beach.
Best Things to Do in Astypalea, Greece
1 – Explore the Picturesque Chora
Chora, the capital of Astypalea, is a stunning whitewashed village perched on a hill with breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea.
As you wander through its narrow, winding streets, you’ll discover charming blue-domed churches, traditional windmills, and quaint cafes. The Venetian Castle, sitting atop the hill, offers panoramic views and a glimpse into the island’s history.
Chora’s unique blend of Cycladic and Dodecanese architecture, combined with its serene atmosphere, makes it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Astypalea.

2 – Soak up the Sun at Livadi Beach
If you’re looking for the best place to bask in the sun while in Astypalaia, Livadi Beach is the answer.
It’s one of Astypalea’s most popular beaches, located just a short drive from Chora. Its crystal-clear turquoise waters, soft sand and great facilities make it a top destination for beach lovers.
Livadi Beach also offers a variety of beachfront tavernas and cafes, where you can enjoy delicious local cuisine and refreshing drinks with a view.

3 – Take a Boat Trip to Konoupa Island
A boat trip to Konoupa Island is a must for those seeking adventure and natural beauty. This uninhabited island, located just off the coast of Astypalaia, boasts pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and secluded coves.
You can spend the day swimming, snorkelling, or simply relaxing on the beach, surrounded by the island’s untouched landscape.
This half-day cruise was one of the highlights of my trip. Konoupa Island is stunning and undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Astypalea. Don’t miss it!
The boat trip also includes a stop for swimming and snorkelling at Koutsomitis Beach and the Red Rock. I recommend booking the tour for your second day on the island, so if the sea conditions aren’t good, you can have another chance to do it.

3 – Vatses Beach
Vatses Beach is one of Astypalea’s most picturesque and untouched beaches.

4 – Steno Megalo
Steno Megalo Beach is a charming stretch of sand dotted with trees located on the narrow isthmus that connects the two main parts of Astypalea.

The infrastructure is very basic, there’s only one tavern and a portable toilet. But because of its convenient location and serene environment, Steno is a popular beach among locals and visitors alike.
5 – Plakes
Plakes Beach, located on the northeastern coast of Astypalea, is a small and secluded beach known for its stunning rocky formations and crystal-clear waters.
The beach’s unique landscape offers excellent opportunities for snorkelling, allowing you to explore the vibrant underwater world.
While it’s not as easily accessible as some other beaches on the island, Plakes’ remote location ensures a peaceful and uncrowded experience, making it an ideal spot for nature lovers and adventurers.
