When visiting Johannesburg in 2018, I could not miss the opportunity to take a Soweto bike tour.
The tour started with a delicious and traditional South African lunch and after that, we went cycling along the streets of Soweto with a very energetic and knowledgeable guide.
For those who aren’t familiar with Soweto and South Africa culture, Soweto is the country’s largest black urban complex, with a population of approximately 1.3 million.
Soweto was created in the 1930s as a township for black people when the white government started separating blacks from whites.
Apart from being the home of two Nobel Prize winners, Soweto was the site of a massive series of protests led by black school children that began on the morning of 1976 and contributed to the end of the Apartheid regime.
Nowadays Soweto seems like more a poor neighbourhood that could be anywhere else in the world.
In Soweto, people are very friendly and welcoming!
The tour finished with a corn beer tasting, a local’s favourite.
You should not miss Soweto when you’re in Joburg.
Safe travels and thanks for watching 🙂
