What to Wear in Paris, The World’s Fashion Capital – A Guide for the Modern Man

Paris is widely regarded as one of the world’s fashion capitals.

Strolling along Champs Elisse, taking a Seine River cruise and seeing the Eiffel Tower is a dream for many people.

Now that this dream is coming true and you’ve booked the tickets, accommodation, and tours, you might be asking yourself: What to wear in France?  What should I pack for Paris?

I’ve been to “City of Light” several times and in all four seasons. That’s why I’m writing this post with tips and suggestions for what to wear in Paris to be smartly dressed and look sharp in your pictures.

If you are travelling to Paris and want to dress like one of the countless stylish locals, here are the items you need to pack.

What to Wear in Paris

Relaxed-Fit Trousers

Relaxed-fit trousers are easily one of the most versatile pieces of clothing you can own. They are light and easy to wear and can be worn in both warmer and cooler temperatures, day or night.

You can pair them with a T-shirt, some funky surf socks, and sneakers for a more casual day look, and then a button-up and blazer or sports coat for a more formal evening look if you are heading out for a date or dinner. 

Jeans

Jeans are another versatile option when in the City of Love. They are definitely on the more casual side, but they are easy to wear and can be paired with almost anything. However, there are a couple of unspoken rules regarding jeans in Paris.

The biggest no-no is skinny jeans. While you can still wear them, most Parisian men opt for fitted or looser-fitting jeans.

Light Blazer

A light blazer is an easy option for turning a casual outfit into something more formal. It can be worn in warmer weather and is ideal for a fancy night out or for simply dressing a bit more stylishly.

Opt for lightweight material such as cotton or linen, especially if you are travelling in the warmer months. However, when it gets colder, a wool blazer is something a bit more unique but still ultra-comfortable and warm.

Turtleneck 

A turtleneck is a great jersey option during the Wintertime. They are ultra-stylish and warm and can be dressed up or dressed down. One of the best parts of a turtleneck is that it can be flattering no matter your height and weight. 

Tailored Shorts

More often than not, during the warmer times of the year, a pair of trousers or jeans are going to be too uncomfortable and hot to wear. However, tailored shorts are a brilliant option to not only keep you cool but to also keep your outfit looking as stylish as possible.

Chelsea Boots

When visiting a fashion-conscious city like Paris, shoes can be important, but there are only two types you need. A pair of leather Chelsea boots are comfortable, can be worn formally or casually, and will also not hurt your feet if you spend the day walking. 

If boots aren’t your style, a pair of leather loafers or something similar will also do the job, and easily pass any dress code requirements you may come across. 

Stylish Sneakers

The other type of shoe you need is a pair of stylish sneakers. These are ideal for long days of walking and exploring, but can also be part of a more formal outfit if you are visiting somewhere a bit more upmarket. 

A simple rule to follow is to have a pair in a neutral tone, such as white, off-white, black, grey, etc. Running shoes are also an option, but they can’t be dressed up the same way a pair of sneakers can. 

Men’s Paris Fashion Tips

Now that you know what to pack for Paris, here are a few tips to ensure you look like the most stylish man in the City of Light during your visit. 

Keep it Timeless

Firstly, don’t overthink what you are going to wear in Paris. Men’s fashion in Paris is all about timeless and classic pieces. A simple blazer, fitted trousers, leather shoes, a scarf, etc. While this doesn’t mean you can’t experiment, it is more about keeping it simple. 

Whether it is Summer or Winter, a pair of shorts or trousers, with a button-up shirt, will be perfect for almost anywhere you go. 

Prepare for the Weather

European weather in general can be unpredictable, no matter the season or time of year. Because of this, be sure to pack a couple of “just in case” pieces. A jacket, sweater, raincoat, and scarf are a few examples.

Don’t Look “Touristy”

While this is completely up to you and there are no hard and fast rules, if you want to dress like a Parisian, you need to ditch the typical touristy items. Baseball caps, bright and bold sneakers, and fanny packs will all make you stand out like a sore thumb. 

Opt for more stylish options such as a sun hat, a comfortable pair of loafers or Chelsea boots, and a small satchel or leather bag. Once again, this is completely up to you, but if style is important, these are the better options. 

Don’t Forget Formal Wear

While Paris is a cosmopolitan and modern city, there are still plenty of “old school” establishments; which means there is a dress code. If you want to go to a few of the high-end restaurants or live shows, a T-shirt and shorts won’t cut it. 

Therefore, pack at least one formal outfit; a pair of fitted trousers, leather shoes, a button-up shirt, and a blazer is more than enough. If you are heading to the theatre, a bowtie or tie may also be needed.
